Biography
Hugh Brodie (February 7, 1933 - April 5, 2017) was an American jazz saxophonist and actor.
Hugh Abdullah Rashid Brodie was born in Warrenton, Warren County, North Carolina and attended the art college in Newark, New Jersey. He had first appearances in clubs in Atlantic City and Manhattan. He moved to Brooklyn with his family around 1960 and studied at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. In 1961 he made his first recordings, when he participated in Cal Massey's album Blues to Coltrane (Candid). In this time he had also some minor roles in the Ossie Davis films When Night is in Manhattan (1970) and The Wiz (1978), and was a member of Screen Actor's Guild. Brodie lived in the following years in Sullivan County, where he performed with local musicians and in the 1980s with Illinois Jacquet. Under his own name he presented several albums such as And the Real Thing (1975), Unforgettable Sax (1994), and Songs for Anu. In 1981 he made the live album "Bebop Loose & Live" with JR Monterose. He was involved in 15 jazz recording sessions between 1961 and 1994, among others with Vera Auer.
