Biography

Tenor saxophonist, David Sanchez, was born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, began playing percussion and drums before discovering tenor sax several years later. As a student of La Escuela Libre de Musica in San Juan, he subsequently became proficient with the soprano and alto saxophone, as well as with clarinet and flute. He received a scholarship at Rutgers University which afforded him the opportunity to frequent the jazz scene in New York City. Working with artists such as Eddie Palmieri, Claudio Roditi and Paquito D'Rivera, he was eventually brought to the attention of Dizzy Gillespie, who invited Sanchez to join his tour with Miriam Makeba.

Sanchez recorded "The Departure," his 1995 debut for Columbia, followed by "Sketches of Dreams," "Street Scenes," "Obsesion," "Melaza," "Travesia," and the Latin Grammy award-winning, "Coral" (2005). He also appears on recordings with bassist Charlie Haden (Nocturne) and trombonist Steve Turre (TNT [Trombone-N-Tenor]).
