Biography

Laurent (Lawrence) Cugny began studying piano at ten years and began playing in garage bands at the age of eighteen years. He began studying economics and decided to devote himself to music. In 1975 he met and played with the multi-instrumentalist Hervé Bourde . In 1979 he joined the training and direct light. The same year he won third prize in piano solo jazz national contest of Defence. He is also interested in cinema , in particular the achievement of short films . In 1987, he toured Europe and recorded two albums with the band Big Light and Gil Evans , which he published a biography Las Vegas Tango next year. In 1993 he published another book on the electrical period of the composer and trumpeter Miles Davis. From 1994 to 1997 is the fifth head of the National Jazz Orchestra . In 2006, he created a concert version of a "jazz opera" he wrote from the play Cloud Tectonics (Cloud Tectonics) of the Puerto Rican writer Jose Rivera . In 2010 appears the recording, with vocalist David Linx , Laika Fatien and Yann-Gael Poncet.

He teaches piano 1981 to 1991 at the Music Information Centre in Paris. In 2001 he obtained a doctorate in musicology at the Sorbonne. Since 2006 he is professor at the same university Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV).
