History

Jermaine Lamarr Cole (born January 28, 1985), known professionally as J. Cole, is an influential American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. Born on an American military base in Frankfurt, Germany, and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Cole is widely regarded as one of the most significant voices in modern hip-hop, known for his storytelling and introspective lyricism.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Cole began his musical journey at the age of 14, initially posting songs on internet forums under the names "Blaza" and "Therapist." While attending St. John's University in New York, he continued to hone his craft, eventually founding the Dreamville record label alongside his business partner Ibrahim Hamad.

He first gained significant attention in the hip-hop community with the release of his debut mixtape, The Come Up, in 2007. His reputation grew following his signing to Jay-Z's Roc Nation imprint in 2009, which was followed by the release of two highly acclaimed mixtapes: The Warm Up (2009) and Friday Night Lights (2010).

Commercial Breakthrough and Chart Success

The Sideline Story and Born Sinner

Cole released his debut studio album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, on September 27, 2011. Supported by the hit single "Work Out," the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was later certified platinum by the RIAA. He followed this success in 2013 with Born Sinner, which also reached the top of the Billboard charts. The album featured the double-platinum single "Power Trip" with R&B artist Miguel and further established Cole as a commercial powerhouse.

2014 Forest Hills Drive

In December 2014, Cole released his third studio album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive. The project became a cultural phenomenon, famously becoming the first hip-hop album in 25 years to be certified triple platinum without any guest features. The album earned Cole a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album and was supported by the documentary series J. Cole: Road to Homecoming.

Artistic Evolution and Later Projects

Cole continued his streak of number-one albums with 4 Your Eyez Only (2016) and KOD (2018). On KOD, he introduced an alter ego, kiLL edward, and explored themes of addiction and mental health. The album broke several streaming records upon its release and was certified platinum within months.

In 2021, Cole released his sixth studio album, The Off-Season. Preceded by the Lewis Street EP and the single "Interlude," the album debuted at number one, marking his sixth consecutive chart-topping project. Several tracks from the album, including "My Life" featuring 21 Savage and Morray, achieved high positions on the Billboard Hot 100.

Production and Philanthropy

Beyond his work as a vocalist, Cole is a self-taught pianist and a prolific producer. He handles the majority of the production for his own albums and has produced tracks for high-profile artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Janet Jackson.

His impact extends into philanthropy through the Dreamville Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting urban youth. In 2015, Cole made headlines for his plan to use his childhood home in Fayetteville to provide rent-free housing for single mothers, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to his community.
