History
Miguel Jontel Pimentel, known professionally as Miguel, is a Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and producer who has become a defining figure in contemporary R&B. Raised in the San Pedro community, Miguel began his career in the early 2000s, initially working with the production company Drop Squad. After declining an offer to join the R&B group Fatty Koo, he signed a solo deal with Universal, though his planned debut album, Young & Free, was never officially released. During this period, he built a reputation in the underground scene through collaborations with artists like Blu and Exile.
Breakthrough and Commercial Success
Miguel’s mainstream trajectory shifted in 2007 when he signed with Jive Records. He initially gained traction as a songwriter, co-writing Jaheim’s "Finding My Way Back," which earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song. He also contributed to Usher’s Raymond v. Raymond before releasing his own debut single, "All I Want Is You," in 2010. The song became a Top Ten R&B hit and served as the title track for his debut studio album, which also featured the enduring singles "Sure Thing" and "Quickie."
The Kaleidoscope Dream Era
In 2012, Miguel reached a new level of critical and commercial acclaim with the release of Kaleidoscope Dream. The album debuted in the Top Five of the Billboard 200 and solidified his status as a progressive R&B innovator. The lead single, "Adorn," became a massive crossover success, topping the R&B charts and winning a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. During this time, Miguel became a highly sought-after collaborator, appearing on Mariah Carey’s platinum-certified "#Beautiful" and working with artists such as J. Cole, A$AP Rocky, and Mac Miller.
Artistic Evolution and Genre Expansion
With his third album, Wildheart (2015), Miguel moved toward a more experimental, rock-influenced sound. The project debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and received a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album. He followed this in 2017 with War & Leisure, an album that blended political undertones with upbeat production, highlighted by the Travis Scott collaboration "Sky Walker."
Miguel has also explored his heritage through his music, releasing the Spanish-language EP Te Lo Dije in 2019. The project featured reimagined versions of his hits and debuted at number 11 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. His versatility has allowed him to remain a fixture on the charts, whether through his own solo work or guest appearances on tracks by Alicia Keys, Kygo, and Dua Lipa.
Recent Projects and Viral Resurgence
The early 2020s saw Miguel continuing to release music through his Art Dealer Chic EP series, including the 2021 release of Art Dealer Chic, Vol. 4. In 2023, his 2010 single "Sure Thing" experienced a massive resurgence due to viral trends on TikTok. This renewed interest propelled the song to number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, surpassing "Adorn" to become his highest-charting solo single to date. Following this viral success, Miguel returned to the studio to release new material, including the 2023 single "Give It to Me."
