Jaten Dimsdale, professionally known as Teddy Swims, is an American singer-songwriter hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. His upbringing was a rich tapestry of experiences, shaped by his involvement in football, musical theater, and his role as the grandson of a Pentecostal pastor. This diverse background exposed him to a wide array of musical influences, far beyond those typically found in a "country boy's" world.
Throughout his high school years and the subsequent period, Swims was a member of various bands. His musical explorations spanned genres such as 80s hair metal, funk, modern metalcore, soul, and country alternative, all of which contributed to his unique artistic identity.
In March 2019, Swims embarked on his first US tour as a hip-hop artist alongside his close friend Addy Maxwell. He described this experience as liberating, allowing him to venture into new creative territories. This period of exploration led him to experiment with blending the diverse genres he admired – including metal, pop-punk, soul, funk, country, gospel, R&B, and show tunes – into a singular sound that defines Teddy Swims.
The moniker "Swims" is an acronym for "Someone Who Isn't Me Sometimes," reflecting Dimsdale's personal journey of integrating different facets of his identity. His artistic mission is to dismantle barriers and foster unity among people. As Swims himself stated, "There are no categories, no stereotypes, no statistic is a definite number. Until we learn to see every person as an individual, we will never truly reach unity."
Teddy Swims gained significant recognition for his song "Lose Control," which broke Billboard Hot 100 records. He has also been notably described as "Post Malone when he’s 50" by Canadian YouTuber and musician Steven "Stevie T" Terreberry.
