Hum is an American alternative rock and post-hardcore band that emerged from Champaign, Illinois, in 1989. The group forged a distinctive sound by blending these genres, creating a characteristic heaviness that became their hallmark. This unique sonic identity is now often referred to as "Heavy Alternative."

Following initial member changes, Hum solidified its lineup in 1993 with Matt Talbot on vocals and guitar, Tim Lash on guitar, Jeff Dimpsey on bass, and Bryan St. Pere on drums. This stable configuration remained intact until the band's initial dissolution in 2000.
