Mynta is a Swedish-Indian musical ensemble formed in 1979, known for forging a unique genre that blends traditional Indian music with Nordic jazz influences. The group has consistently produced music that respects the integrity of its root sounds while creating something entirely new, defining a distinct approach to world music by drawing from centuries-old musical traditions.
The ensemble is prominently led by Indian virtuosos Fazal Qureshi on tabla and Shankar Mahadevan on vocals. Both are accomplished musicians within the classical Indian tradition, having performed globally with renowned artists such as Hariprasad Chaurasia, Shivkumar Sharma, and Zakir Hussain. Fazal Qureshi is the younger brother of Zakir Hussain, a member of John McLaughlin's pioneering fusion group Shakti, which was instrumental in early European fusion music.
