Jay Som is the musical project of Oakland-based songwriter Melina Duterte. Daughter of Filipino immigrants, Duterte initially played trumpet and considered a conservatory program for jazz before shifting her focus to songwriting. After studying music production and recording at community college, she began composing and recording in her home studio, releasing music under the name Jay Som.
Duterte is known for performing and recording all instruments on her releases herself. Following the critical success of her album Turn Into, which was initially self-released as demos titled Untitled in 2015 and later re-released by Top Shelf and then Polyvinyl Records in 2016, Jay Som gained wider recognition. Turn Into garnered significant attention, including an 8.2 rating from Pitchfork.
