Skillet is an American rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1996. Led by founding member John Cooper, the group has evolved from its post-grunge origins into one of the most successful hard rock acts in the world, known for blending heavy riffs with symphonic elements, electronic textures, and powerful anthemic choruses.

Formation and Early Years

The band was founded by John Cooper and guitarist Ken Steorts. Both were coming from previous projects—Seraph and Urgent Cry, respectively—that had recently disbanded. At the suggestion of their pastor, they formed a new group as a side project. Because the members came from different musical backgrounds, they chose the name "Skillet" to represent the "mixing" of various styles into one sound. While the name began as a joke, it stuck even as the band’s lineup and sound matured.

Skillet’s self-titled debut was released in 1996 through ForeFront Records, showcasing a sound heavily influenced by the grunge and post-grunge movements of the era. They followed this in 1998 with Hey You, I Love Your Soul, which marked a shift toward alternative rock and introduced electronic elements. This era also saw the addition of Korey Cooper, John’s wife, who initially joined to play keyboards during live performances before becoming a permanent member.

Style Evolution and Mainstream Breakthrough

The early 2000s were a period of significant transition for the band. With the releases of Invincible (2000) and Alien Youth (2001), Skillet leaned further into industrial and electronic rock. However, it was 2003’s Collide that signaled their move into the hard rock and nu-metal territory that would define their future success. The album caught the attention of Lava Records (a division of Atlantic Records), leading to a mainstream re-release and the band's first Grammy nomination.

The Impact of Comatose and Awake

Skillet achieved massive commercial success with the release of Comatose in 2006. Featuring hit singles like "Rebirthing" and "Whispers in the Dark," the album was eventually certified Gold and later Platinum by the RIAA. During this period, the band solidified its "symphonic rock" sound, utilizing strings and dramatic arrangements alongside heavy guitars.

In 2009, the band released Awake, which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. The album featured the massive hits "Monster" and "Hero," both of which received significant airplay and were featured extensively in sports broadcasts and WWE events. "Monster" became one of the most-streamed digital rock songs of all time, further cementing Skillet's place in the global rock landscape. This era also introduced drummer and vocalist Jen Ledger, whose backup vocals became a signature part of the band's sound.

Recent Projects and Continued Legacy

Following the success of Awake, Skillet continued to release high-charting albums, including Rise (2013), Unleashed (2016), and Victorious (2019). Each project maintained the band's reputation for high-energy rock and positive messaging. In 2022, they released Dominion, followed by a deluxe edition titled Day of Destiny. Their twelfth studio album, Revolution, was scheduled for release in 2024.

Throughout their career, Skillet has been recognized for their relentless touring schedule and high-octane live performances. They have headlined major tours like Winter Jam and toured alongside prominent rock acts such as Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, and Seether.
