The stage adaptation of Prince’s seminal work is officially set to debut on Broadway following an initial run in Minneapolis that took place last year. According to reports from Variety, the show will begin its preview performances at the Majestic Theatre in New York City on March 12, 2027. The production’s official opening night is currently slated for April 12, 2027. This move to "The Great Purple Way" represents what has been described as an "inevitable Broadway upgrade" for the project, which is based on the classic 1984 film and the accompanying 13-times platinum album.

While the full cast for the Broadway production has not yet been announced, the creative team features several prominent industry figures. The musical is being directed by Tony nominee Saheem Ali, whose previous work includes the Tony-winning Buena Vista Social Club. The book for the stage show was penned by Peter Duchan, the playwright and screenwriter known for Dogfight. Choreography for the production will be handled by Ebony Williams, who recently gained widespread recognition for her work on Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour.

Musical Direction and Creative Vision

The musical team is led by composer and musical director Jason Michael Webb, who recently worked on the Michael Jackson-themed musical MJ. To ensure the production honors the original sound of the artist—who was a central figure in the Funk, pop, and rock genres since forming his musical identity in 1958—two of his longtime collaborators are serving as music advisers. These include keyboardist Morris Hayes and drummer Bobby Z (also known as Bobby Rivkin).

Director Saheem Ali spoke about his personal connection to the material and the importance of bringing the music to a new audience in a statement:

The Purple Rain musical maintains the same plot as the semi-autobiographical 1984 film. The story follows a character known as “The Kid,” an up-and-coming musician based in Minneapolis. The narrative tracks his struggle with a troubled past and complex family life while he simultaneously seeks out stardom in the local music scene. While the show is centered on the music from the Purple Rain soundtrack, reports indicate that the production will include theatrical renditions of over 20 Prince tracks in total.

The decision to bring this story to the stage aligns with the late artist's own creative interests. In a 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Bobby Z recalled how the musician was personally inspired by major theatrical productions and had even suggested bringing other projects to the stage before his death in 2016. Bobby Z noted that the artist was particularly impressed by contemporary shows like Rent and Hamilton.

Other recent authorized endeavors include various merchandise lines and the nine-hour documentary directed by Ezra Edelman, illustrating the continued demand for the artist's work nearly a decade after his passing.
