Royal Decoration in Nijmegen

The 73-year-old musician Alex Van Halen was awarded the royal decoration "Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw" (Knight in the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands) on Tuesday afternoon. The ceremony took place at the Berchmanianum, the academy building of Radboud University, where Nijmegen mayor Hubert Bruls presented the honor. This decoration represents the highest civilian knighthood in the Netherlands and is used to recognize extraordinary merits in the arts, science, sport, and literature.

During the event, Mayor Bruls spoke of the drummer's influential role in writing a "remarkable chapter in the history of rock music." Following the ceremony, the musician reflected on the significance of the title:

"My cousin organized most of this. But I'm very grateful. I think institutions like this are important in people's lives because it adds a dignity and a gravity to what we do. Whether it's actually deserved or not, that's another question. But we can live up to it. That's the whole thing, is you gotta have something to live up to."

As part of the honors, the drummer signed Nijmegen's Book of the City, a special register reserved for distinguished visitors. His signature now appears alongside other notable figures such as Bruce Springsteen and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands. Family Roots and Migration

The co-founder of Van Halen shares a deep history with the city of Nijmegen. Although he and his brother Edward Lodewijk Van Halen were born in Amsterdam, the family moved to Nijmegen shortly afterward. Their father, Jan, was also a musician, and their mother, Eugenia, was born in Indonesia. The family lived in Nijmegen until 1962, when they relocated to the United States and settled in Pasadena, California, eventually becoming naturalized U.S. citizens.

In 1972, the brothers formed a band called MAMMOTH. The group was later renamed when singer David Lee Roth joined the lineup, which also featured bassist Michael Anthony. The band eventually became one of the largest rock acts in the U.S. during the 1980s, later featuring Sammy Hagar on vocals. Their career achievements include an induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2007 and a Grammy Award for best Hard Rock performance for the 1991 album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.

Musical Influence and Chart Success

The band's commercial dominance included five No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 chart and more than 20 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Their 1984 single "Jump" spent five weeks at the top of the charts. Other major hits included "Runnin' With The Devil", "Dance The Night Away", "Hot For Teacher", and "Panama".

According to Modern Drummer, the elder Van Halen brother was instrumental to the group's "electrifying, dramatic sound." He led the rhythm section on standout tracks such as "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "Unchained". His double-bass pedal work on "Hot For Teacher" is cited as deeply influential, noted for its combination of technical prowess and original composition.

"Brothers" Memoir and Legacy

In October 2024, the drummer released his memoir, titled "Brothers", through HarperCollins. The 231-page book provides an intimate look into the story of family, music, and the bond between Alex and Eddie, who passed away in October 2020 at age 65 due to complications from cancer. In the book, Alex describes the profound connection he shared with his brother:

"I was with him from day one. We shared the experience of coming to this country and figuring out how to fit in. We shared a record player, an 800-square-foot house, a mom and dad, and a work ethic. Later, we shared the back of a tour bus, alcoholism, the experience of becoming successful, of becoming fathers and uncles, and of spending more hours in the studio than I’ve spent doing anything else in this life. We shared a depth of understanding that most people can only hope to achieve in a lifetime."
