History

Big Sean (born Sean Michael Leonard Anderson on March 25, 1988) is a multi-platinum American rapper who rose from the Detroit underground to become one of the most commercially successful figures in modern hip-hop. Known for his clever wordplay and distinct flow, he spent over a decade as a cornerstone of Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label before transitioning into independent business ventures.

Early Life and Discovery

Raised in Detroit by his mother and grandparents, Anderson attended the Detroit Waldorf School and later Cass Technical High School. His musical foundation was built on the principles of hard work and artistic expression. While in high school, he gained local notoriety by participating in weekly rap battles at the Detroit radio station 102.7 FM.

In 2005, a pivotal moment occurred when Sean learned that Kanye West was being interviewed at the station. He headed to the studio and convinced West to listen to a freestyle. Impressed by the young rapper's talent, West took his demo. After two years of persistent communication and song submissions, West officially signed Big Sean to G.O.O.D. Music in 2007.

Mixtapes and the Finally Famous Era

Big Sean built his initial following through a series of high-profile mixtapes. His debut, Finally Famous: The Mixtape (2007), featured the single "Get'cha Some," which earned him critical attention from major hip-hop publications. He followed this with UKNOWBIGSEAN in 2009 and the breakthrough Finally Famous Vol. 3: BIG in 2010. The latter featured collaborations with Drake, Tyga, and Curren$y, solidifying his place as a rising star in the industry.

His debut studio album, Finally Famous, arrived in June 2011. The project was a commercial success, fueled by hit singles such as "My Last" featuring Chris Brown, "Marvin & Chardonnay" featuring Roscoe Dash and Kanye West, and the top 10 hit "Dance (Ass)" featuring Nicki Minaj. The album featured a wide array of guest stars, including Pharrell Williams, Lupe Fiasco, and Wiz Khalifa.

Chart Dominance and Dark Sky Paradise

Following his debut, Sean released Hall of Fame in 2013, which included the singles "Guap" and "Beware." However, it was his third studio album, Dark Sky Paradise (2015), that marked a significant shift toward a more mature and atmospheric sound. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and produced the massive hits "I Don't Fuck with You" featuring E-40 and "Blessings" featuring Drake and Kanye West.

In 2017, he released I Decided, a concept album that explored themes of rebirth and second chances. It became his second consecutive number-one album and featured "Bounce Back," which became his highest-charting solo single in the United States. Later that year, he collaborated with producer Metro Boomin for the joint project Double or Nothing.

Detroit 2 and Professional Independence

After a brief hiatus to focus on his mental health, Big Sean returned in 2020 with Detroit 2. Serving as a sequel to his 2012 mixtape Detroit, the album was a tribute to his hometown and featured a diverse range of artists, including Eminem, Nipsey Hussle, and Jhené Aiko. The album debuted at number one, marking his third consecutive solo chart-topper.

In 2021, Big Sean announced his departure from G.O.O.D. Music after 14 years. He cited the need for a more equitable business structure while maintaining a "brotherhood" with Kanye West. Shortly after, he released the EP What You Expect in collaboration with producer Hit-Boy.
