History

Carolina Giraldo Navarro, known professionally as Karol G, is a prominent Colombian singer and songwriter who has become a defining figure in the global reggaeton and Latin trap scenes. While her core sound is rooted in urban genres, she has frequently explored diverse musical styles, including reggae and sertaneja. Since her debut, she has earned significant industry recognition, including the Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2018 and numerous nominations for the Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born and raised in Medellín, Colombia, Giraldo began her musical journey as a teenager. In 2004, at the age of 14, she appeared on the Colombian version of The X Factor, which provided her first taste of the spotlight. In 2014, she moved to New York City to further her knowledge of the music industry and refine her craft. This move eventually led to her signing with Universal Music Latino, marking the start of her professional recording career on a major label.

Breakthrough and Debut Success

Karol G’s mainstream breakthrough arrived in 2017 with the release of "Ahora Me Llama," a collaboration with Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny. The track served as the lead single for her debut studio album, Unstoppable, and quickly became a hit, establishing her as a major female voice in a male-dominated genre. Her momentum continued into late 2018 with the release of "Secreto," a collaboration with Anuel AA that achieved massive commercial success across Latin America.

Global Recognition and Artistic Evolution

In 2019, Karol G released her second studio album, Ocean. The project represented a stylistic shift from her debut, moving toward a more relaxed and versatile sound. That same year, she participated in the massive hit "China," alongside Anuel AA, J Balvin, Daddy Yankee, and Ozuna, which became her first music video to surpass one billion views on YouTube.

Her international profile reached new heights with the release of "Tusa" in late 2019. Featuring Nicki Minaj, the song became a global phenomenon, staying on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart for 25 weeks and receiving a 28× Latin Platinum certification from the RIAA. Karol G has continued to dominate the charts into the 2020s, notably with "Mamiii," a collaboration with Becky G that reached the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, marking her highest-charting single in the United States to date.
